In the year 2003, PICMG has established AdvancedTCA (PICMG 3.0) and Advanced Mezzanine Card (AdvancedMC, or PICMG AdvancedMC) as the dominant platform for high-availability telecom applications. That year became first implementations of AdvancedTCA (released in Beta) for a variety of protocols that operated over AdvancedTCA’s high-speed fabric, including Ethernet Channel (PICMG 3.1), InfiniBand (PICMG 3.2), StarFabric (PICMG 3.3), PCI Express (PICMG 3.4), and Serial Rapid IO channels.
Different from many of their predecessors, AdvancedTCA and AdvancedMC are not buses in search of an application. They are not a modification and retrofit of general-purpose platforms in hopes of appealing to telecom OEMs. But they are defined as a new collaboration aimed to optimize telecom platform such as bandwidth, upgradeability, scalability, management, interoperability, and cost.
